چکیده

We present a novel model in which shortening of a magnetic flux tube following localized, three-dimensional reconnection generates strong gas-dynamic shocks around its apex. The shortening releases magnetic energy by progressing away from the reconnection site at the Alfvén speed. This launches inward flows along the field lines whose collision creates a pair of gas-dynamic shocks. The shocks raise both the mass density and temperature inside the newly shortened flux tube. Reconnecting field lines whose initial directions differ by more that 100◦ can produce a concentrated knot of plasma hotter that 20 MK, consistent with observations. In spite of these high temperatures, the shocks convert less than 10% of the liberated magnetic energy into heat — the rest remains as kinetic energy of bulk motion. These gas-dynamic shocks arise only when the reconnection is impulsive and localized in all three dimensions; they are distinct from the slow magnetosonic shocks of the Petschek steady-state reconnection model. Long Duration Flare Emission: Impulsive Heating or Gradual Heating?

Flare emissions in X-ray and EUV wavelengths have previously been modeled as the plasma response to impulsive heating from magnetic reconnection. Some flares exhibit gradually evolving X-ray and EUV light curves, which are believed to result from superposition of an extended sequence of impulsive heating events occurring in different adjacent loops or even unresolved threads within each loop. I...

A Model for Patchy Reconnection in Three Dimensions

We show, theoretically and via MHD simulations, how a short burst of reconnection localized in three dimensions on a one-dimensional current sheet creates a pair of reconnected flux tubes. We focus on the post-reconnection evolution of these flux tubes, studying their velocities and shapes. We find that slow-mode shocks propagate along these reconnected flux tubes, releasing magnetic energy as ...

Multi-wavelength Signatures of Magnetic Reconnection of a Flare Associated Coronal Mass Ejection

The evolution of an X2.7 solar flare, that occurred in a complex βγδ magnetic configuration region on 2003 November 3, is discussed utilizing a multiwavelength data set. The Hα images taken from the solar tower telescope at ARIES, Nainital, reveal well-defined footpoint (FP) and loop-top (LT) sources. As the flare evolves, the LT source moves upward and the separation between the two FP sources...

The shock reprocessing model of electron acceleration in impulsive solar flares

We propose a new two-stage model for acceleration of electrons in solar flares. In the first stage, electrons are accelerated stochastically in a post-reconnection turbulent downflow. The second stage is the reprocessing of a subset of these electrons as they pass through a weakly compressive fast shock above the apex of the closed flare loop on their way to the chromosphere. We call this the "...

Fermi Acceleration at Fast Shock in a Solar Flare and Impulsive Loop-top Hard X-ray Source

Fermi acceleration has not been considered to be viable to explain non-thermal electrons (20 100 KeV) produced in solar ares, because of its high injection energy. Here, we propose that non-thermal electrons are e ciently accelerated by rst-order Fermi process at the fast shock, as a natural consequence of the new magnetohydrodynamic picture of the aring region revealed with Yohkoh. An oblique ...
